Personality Differences of Adolescents with Working Mothers Research proposal on A comparative study on personality of adolescents between working and non working mother in Bangladesh Shinthia parvin SUMMARY The present study will conduct to investigate whether there will any difference in personality of adolescence between working or non-working mother in Bangladesh. For this purpose 100 students will take from different areas of Dhaka city where 50 students mother is housewife and 50 students mother is working women. Each of the group will match regarding their age, educational qualification and socio-economic status. The information will collect through two questionnaire (1) questionnaire for participants’ personal information and (2) Eysenck personality Questionnaire (EPQ). The age group of the participants was between 12 to 18 years. The statistical treatment of the data will do by t-test. The hypotheses of this research assumed that â€Å" there are differences in personality of adolescence between working or non- working mother,†indicating there would be a difference among the four dimension of the personality like Extraversion (E) ,neuroticism (N) , Psychoticism (P) , and Lie scale (L) , in the two groups. Introduction Adolescence is the period of life from late childhood until physical growth is relatively complete and also marks the beginning of early adulthood. Age 13 through 16 is considered early adolescence and 17 through 21 is late adolescence (Wolman, 1989). The term adolescence is commonly used to describe the transitional stage of physical and psychological development between childhood and adulthood. There is no one scientific definition of adolescence or set age boundary. There is a key development change that nearly all adolescents experience during their transition from childhood to adulthood. This time frame, however, not only describes a very diverse reality, but adolescence varies considerably across cultures, over time, and within individuals (Kaplan, 2004). Personality is dynamic which depends on organization within the individual of those psychophysical systems that determine his or her unique adjustment to his environment .personality is what a man really is (Allport,1975) .Personality can be defined as the unique pattern of behavioral and mental processes that characterize an individual and the individual’s interactions with the environment (Crider others, 1993). Each man is individual to the dimensions of personality. Because of this difference in personality some women wanted only to look after their family and some women wanted to engage in work outside of their home. Veroff and fello (1970) mentioned that the aim of the women who have professional values are education and working life, whereas the aim of the family related house women are marriage and bringing up their children. French and lesses (1964) have shown in their research that the ancient mentality based on women who Have definite goals demonstrate good skill when they play their role as a wife and as a mother. Majority of Bangladeshi women play a role as a housewife more than a working women, but the women who are residing in the cities are beginning to establish their own profession. Huq (1981) has shown in a research that 55% of working women in the town are the principle earning person of the family, 20% work for filling up the shortage of each other’s income, 6% work to pass their time, 12% work for utilizing their education and 4% work for enjoying their freedom through their profession. Yet, most of the women are still housewives and the numbers of working women are less in number. Bangladeshi society considers motherhood the most desirable role for the women. And family responsibilities are more important for women than careers (Khan Amanullah ),1998 . Miller (1975) saw that a mother’s job creates a negative influence on their child. Traditionally Bangladeshi women work within the family structure. The working women have to work both within the family and in their work place. So it creates more stress on them. It can also affect children‘s life. Islam Rahman (1991) found that the housewife mothers make their children more dependent than working mothers and they become more protective of their female child than of their male child and encourages the male child to develop their language skill .on the other hand, a working mother makes their male child more dependent than their female child and greatly influence them to develop their language skill .The hypothesis of this research assumed that â€Å"there are differences in personality of adolescents between working and non-working mother†, indicating there would be a difference among four dimensions of the personality like Extraversion (E), Neuroticism (N), psychoticism (P), and Lie scale (L), in the two groups. Aims The aim of this research project is to à ¯Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ · Understand adolescent’s personality. à ¯Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ · Investigate there will any differences in personality of adolescents between working and non-working mother. Justification/Rationale Adolescence is a very critical and transitional period of life span of a person. In that time, adolescents have to cope with their physical, social, psychological changes; that is why they have to face a lot of stressful situation such as family, school and peer group pressure which effect their life. Sometimes, adolescents may fall down from their mainstream because of anger, life stress, and lack of consciousness which is threatening to their development. The findings of the study will be helpful to understand the status of personality of the adolescents. The study would have some applied values and the study would give new knowledge about personality and its related of other problems of adolescence period. Therefore, this study will help us to provide such information which is very essential for mental health workers, psychologists, sociologists, governments, NGOs and policy makers to take effective steps to facilitate adolescent development. Method Participants 50 working women’s child and 50 non-working women’s child will take as a sample of the present research. The samples will collect from different places of Dhaka city. The age range of the student will between 12 to 18 years. Their educational qualifications will from class vii to HSC level. The professions of the working mother will school teacher, college teacher, government service holder, doctor, nurse, and banker. Instruments Two types of questionnaire will use. First a demographic questionnaire will give to get the personal information of the participants like age, educational qualification, socioeconomic status, monthly family income, etc. The second questionnaire will Eyesenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) Bengali version(translated standardized byRahman in 1980). EPQ contained one hundred and one items. Both questionnaires will give to the participants individually. Procedure The sample will collect from the different areas of Dhaka city. In this study two types of questionnaire will use, at first questionnaire will be given to collect participants personal information and EPQ is the self-directed questionnaire. Before responding the participants will assure that full confidentiality will be maintained. The participants will answer the questions by circling the ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. For each positive item, score 1 indicates ‘yes’ and 0 for ‘no’. Reverse scoring will use for the negative items. The sums of the scores of all items will the total score of the scale for an individual.

Virginia Woolf :: essays research papers

My Thought on Virginia Woolf There are many authors who have the ability to be one of the greatest writers of all time, but to my knowledge of books I believe the majority I read are excellent. Virginia Woolf to many, is a prominent writer. I wish I could say the same as well. I can not judge her writing for I have just began to study such remarkable essayists. I can state this, her ability to capture ones mind is unprecedented. She does it so well, it is almost natural. It is clear in all her writings she has the readers attention in full, while she explains facts in great detail. Even though she had a traumatic childhood, having manic-depressive illness, she is a brilliant writer. In her essay, Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid, she says, "We are both prisoners tonight—he boxed up in his machine with a gun handy; we lying in the dark with a gas-mask handy. If we were free we should be out in the open, dancing, at the play, or sitting at the window talking together." She was told they were free, but they were still locked in their houses occupied with fear, every hour the thought of death progressing in their head. This is an example of great imagery she uses in explaining an event. In the same essay she has many more examples of imagery, more than can be expressed. I am beginning to believe she is as remarkable as people say. The more and more I read her writing, the more I began to believe this. She grabs my attention faster and more intensely than any other essayist. Many people believe her writing style is hard to comprehend, which I can understand why. This allows her examples of imagery to go far beyond other great essayists. Her vocabulary is exceedingly more advanced and at a higher pace than of my own. It gives me the opportunity to learn such vocabulary and to use in oral communication. This paper has given me the chance to learn more about

Dramatic significance Essay

The action during act 1 scene 2 takes place outside Prospero’s cell on the island, where his ship has been wrecked due to Gonzalo being ordered to give Prospero a leaky boat. In this significant scene we gain an insight of the remaining characters and learn more about the background of the play.  As we know, the first inhabitants introduced to the audience in this scene are called Miranda with her father Prospero. The scene’s opening establishes the fact that Miranda has seen the shipwreck of one of the fleet’s ships, and she asks her father to help the victims, which is seen as somewhat ironic because it was he, who caused the storm in the first place, despite it only being fictional. The reason for the storm was purely for the sake of Miranda. This for Prospero conveys his protection and concern for the well being of his daughter, but, for Miranda, it indicates her sensitivity and worry for the others. In her first speech on lines 10-11, she tells her father ‘Had I been any god of power, I would have sunk the sea within the earth.’ From this it means that she wanted the earth to envelop the sea instead of the ship sinking to the depths of the ocean with all its crew. We can also infer from her appeals to her father from her previous quote, the significance of magic, which is the first indication we have of Prospero’s supernatural powers. This suggestion is enhanced further in line 25, when Prospero talks of his gown, as it symbolises his magical powers. ‘Lie there, my Art’. There is more mention of his ‘Art,’ as during this scene, he was ‘raps in secret studies,’ which implies Shakespeare’s terminology signifies his studying of magic. This suggestion is reinforced by the use of ‘transported’ on line 76 because this could be interpreted as enchantment. Therefore essentially, this scene provides a firm account for the character of Prospero, as a protagonist of ‘The Tempest.’ The consequences of the storm, conveyed in scene 2 can provide a metaphor for the past turmoil in the lives of the characters. This is significant to the rest of the play firstly, for the reason that it symbolises the usurpation of the King of Milan (Prospero), which is like being overthrown in the stormy tides. Secondly, it shows earthly rulers, seen as powerless against the full elemental force of the storm, which implies a nature versus nurture battle, in conjunction with the natural serenity of the island, perfect before the dramatic social transformation of repentance, imprisonment, reconciliation and enchantment. Later in the scene, Prospero finds a spirit call Ariel. He asks Prospero for his freedom, after a witch called Sycorax had imprisoned Ariel in a pine tree. Ariel had been imprisoned in the tree for twelve years, but meanwhile Sycorax had died, therefore Ariel would have been left in the tree forever if Prospero had not released him. To repay Prospero, he is told that he must obey him or run the risk of imprisonment again. ‘If thou more murmur’st. I will rend an oak.’ After arriving on the island, Prospero had befriended Caliban and educated him. In return, Caliban had repaid his early kindness by attempting to rape Miranda, as we know that she is beautiful as her name can be defined as ‘the wonderful one.’ This is a significant turning point within the play because in the mirrored feelings between the two there stems an abundance of issues in after this. Prospero’s attitude is one of anger, but so much that the punishment results in the enslaving of Caliban. ‘For this, be sure, tonight thou shalt have cramps.’ As we begin to understand the characters’ actions and motivations, we appreciate Prospero’s motives for the testing of Ferdinand, son of the King of Naples. Ferdinand and Miranda fall in love immediately, and Ferdinand, thinking that his father is dead, offers to make Miranda the Queen of Naples. Naturally, Miranda is attracted to Ferdinand, as he is the only man other than her father that she has ever properly known, with the exception of Caliban, who is half beast and since he tried to rape her, she obviously dislikes him and tries to avoid him. Prospero, who hoped that the young couple would love each other, decides that Ferdinand must undergo tests to suffer for Miranda, to make sure that he was the right husband for her. Ferdinand, a brave, heroic character, accepts Prospero’s demands after Prospero charms him with his magic, despite rejecting such a preposterous suggestion. ‘No! I will resist such entertainment, till mine enemy has more power.’ Prospero masterfully brings Miranda and Ferdinand together, which plays a part in a recurring theme within the play and is significant within the episode as it symbolises hope and re-generation. I am inclined to think this because at the end of the play, after hope and anticipation for harmony, it has a happy ending. Again though, we see Prospero’s protection over Miranda, which displays and accentuates her innocence as incapable to select a suitable husband, by the trial of Ferdinand as a prisoner who is condemned to carry logs. Essentially, the opening scenes of the play, especially in act 1 scene 2, are significant to the rest of the play as conflict begins to emerge and the characters begin to show their true colours. Not only as an introduction to the play, scene 2 has a major impact and an effect on the rest of the play and the relationships between the characters whilst they are learning to get along with each other on the island, segregated from the rest of the world.

Comparing Beowulf And The Anglo Saxon Period - 1292 Words

Realism in Beowulf In the old English Anglo-Saxon writings, many heroes were given fanciful characteristics. For example, Beowulf was depicted with an immense amount of strength that people today could not achieve. Nowadays, the recreation of old fiction is very common. However, when fiction from the eighth century is recreated to fit our modern time, the characters are seen to resemble our human features, skills, and ways of thinking. Eighth-century writing is not as rational as our entertainment today. Comparing today s modern Beowulf Grendel (Gunnarsson) with the Anglo-Saxon period Beowulf (Heaney), we are shown the many differences of culture and realism between the characters through their strength, intellect, and way of living. Beowulf, a medieval geatish warrior, was portrayed as a strong and invisible hero in the Epic. He had the strength of a god and could destroy any evil with his bare hands. Beowulf displayed his strength through boasting or physical actions. It was all to establish his identity because talk and action were just as important as deeds.
